Breadalbane Folklore Centre

Museum | Killin | Scotland | United Kingdom

The Breadalbane Folklore Centre in Killin is a historic center dedicated to the preservation and presentation of local folklore and history. It is located in a former 19th century mill that was once operated by the MacNab family and represents a significant part of the region's industrial past. The building is situated by the River Dochart and offers impressive views of the surrounding landscape.

Collections and Exhibitions

The center houses a diverse collection of artifacts reflecting the history and culture of the Breadalbane region. A particular focus is on the healing stones of Saint Fillan, which are said to possess healing powers and have a long tradition in the region. These stones are displayed in the center and can be viewed there.

Another highlight is a sculpture of a wolf, representing a local legend in which Saint Fillan tamed a wolf to help with his work. This story is brought to life through the sculpture and is a fascinating example of the region's rich folklore.

Educational offerings and events

The Breadalbane Folklore Centre regularly offers events and workshops focusing on various aspects of Scottish folklore and history. These events are aimed at visitors of all ages and provide an interactive way to learn more about the local culture.

Current developments

In 2011, the center had to temporarily close due to budget cuts. However, thanks to the dedication of the local community, it was able to reopen and is now run by volunteers. The volunteers are working on restoring the building and expanding the exhibitions to continue preserving and presenting the history and culture of the region.

The Breadalbane Folklore Centre is a significant place to learn more about the history and folklore of the region and gain insight into the lives of the people in and around Killin.

Wasn't open. Asked around locally and found out it is closed until further notice. Disappointed as I had come especially to see it. Lovely building with good photo opportunities of the water wheel.

This place was unfortunately shut on the day of my visit, however there are some good photo opportunities of the building and its old water wheel around on the water side.
